Types of houses in our country : SFN

One of the most important things man needs in life is a house. It is a safe place to sleep after the day's work, as we look around, we see different types of houses. Some houses some houses are used as offices, schools or factories. Some are old while some are new.

In the northern part of Nigeria, the big cities have the old and new parts, the old city has mainly mud houses with flat mud roofs and small windows, there are also round mud huts with pointed straw roofs. There is usually a mud wall around the old city. The flat mud roofs help the house cool from the very hot weather.

But in the new part of the cities, the houses have brick walls, iron roofing sheets and many glass windows,

Down in the northern part of the country, most old mud houses are found in the small towns and villages, such houses too are either round or rectangular in shape. The round ones have straw pointed roofs with a window each, but the rectangular ones have mostly old, rusty roofing sheet.

Modern houses in the south are different shape and sizes. There are very tall building especially in crowded cities. The tall buildings are mostly used as offices, some are ten-story high. Such buildings have a lift to take people up and down the building. A lift is worked by electricity, so if there is no electricity, people working or living in such a building will have to climb very long, winding stairs with over a hundred steps.

In the villages and small towns, modern houses can be seen scattered among the old mud houses. New modern houses are being built daily all over the country, the come in different shapes, sizes and colours. Some are bungalows; others are storey houses while some houses even have three or four floors with many flats.

But there is one thing that all modern houses have which the old ones don't have, all modern house in the city, town or village have strong metal bars called burglary proof bars on all windows. Some people even have them on doors to protect them and their property from thieves. However, the burglary proof bars can be death traps especially if there is a fire outbreak in a house.
