Adaku prepares to go to school : Story by SFN
Adaku is the first child in her family,she has two younger brother, their father dies when she was in primary two (2), since then, her mother has been taken care of the children alone.
Adaku's mother is a member of one of the cooperative societies in Aba, she sells oil,milk,sugar and all kind of cooking stuffs at the ariaria market, from the little profits she makes, she pay #50 daily to the saving scheme of the cooperative society, once she pays the daily contribution she takes her mind off it.
Early this year, adaku took national common entrance examination to the ovom girls secondary with four other pupils from her school, she was the only one admitted, that means she would go to Aba from umuahia for her secondary education, adaku's mother was full of joy for daughter, but also she was very sad,she kept on thinking of how she would pay the school fees and buy all the other things adaku would need.
Adaku notice that her mother was worried,she asked her, "mummy, are you not happy that i am going to a federal government college?
Her mother replied to her, " I am very happy, why do you think that am unhappy?
Adaku replied to her mother,"Each time you are alone,you are sad.
Mother replied to adaku: well, my dear you are right,how can I alone find the money to send you to school in aba for six years.
Adaku reply to her mother: I see God will do it, mother.
Her mother raised up her head and looked towards the sky,murmuring her own prayer.
Adaku ask her mother, mummy when are you taking your savings from the cooperative society?"
Her mother replied to adaku and said: middle of December, of course,but what will #50 a day come to? Can it even buy your books and school uniform and other things needed.
Adaku thought about it and brought out her Biro and note book from her school bag, she worked out the sums and smiled, she was very exited and shouted, oh my God, "mother, by the second week of December, you would have contributed #50 in 305 places.
That should be #15,250.00. Do you need that much money for my school?"
Adaku's mother was excited and she said, my dear, thank you, I didn't even remember the self-help scheme at all, not to talk of working out my savings. Now, we can begin to buy all the things you need straight away, adaku and her mother were very happy.
